Customer Service/Collection specialist (Former Employee), New York, NY –
My job was to come in and speak to customers all day about paying their late bills. My coworkers made my day go by quickly & were always eager to help if I needed. My supervisors were also very willing to help without complaint if I requested. The supervisors left us to do our jobs without looking over our shoulders, which was very relaxing. The hardest – more...  part of the job was when the customers were irate, but that wasn't very often. Overall, it was a nice place to work. – less

Great pay, but at a high price
Business Solutions Consultant (Former Employee), Williamsport PA –
Pros: great co workers and excellent wages, benefits
Cons: stifing management and company devoid of integrity
There are many aspects of working at Verizon that I really loved. When I began there, it was still called Bell Atlantic. The job, in those days, was very customer-service oriented. The pay and benefits were excellent. It was a joy to go to work in the morning. The coworkers (many of whom are still friends of mine today)were wonderful. With the evolution – more...  of Bell to Verizon, the landscape of the position changed significantly. Customer service is no longer the priority, and sales became the make-or-break goal. Very, very high sales objectives and relentless behind the scenes monitoring by management. In short, employees are now required to "sell a paper bag with a hole in it". While the wages that Verizon is willing to pay its employees remains the BEST pay in our area for call center work- bar none- it comes with a high price. While we, as parents, teach our children about "doing the right thing" and about values like integrity and honesty, ALL of these values are checked at the front door of the office at Verizon. This was a struggle for me, almost did me in- But not for long- I decided that I would rather make less- a LOT less money- and have my integrity and values- So I handed in my resignation. You can't teach your children one set of rules and live by another.
The money just isn't worth it. – less

Enjoyed 29 years and 6 Months with Verizon/formerly GTE
Senior Buyer, Supply Chain Services (Former Employee), 600 Hidden Ridge, Irving, TX –
A typical day at work for me was Interfacing with Engineers and Vendors an processing purchase orders for Central Office Equipment for various job sites. Also maintained communication with Engineering and Network Planning counterparts on items and process changes related to quotes. Worked with suppliers to make sure material was delivered and received – more...  in a timely manner. Being a team player and a leader, I worked well with all my peers. The job was very demanding but not hard. I always looked at every day as a challenge. The best part of the day was satisfying the customer. – less

Hard place to work
Consultant (Former Employee), Lancaster, PA –
Pros: win prizes
Cons: too many call requirements
With any customer service job, the customers are sometimes the hardest part of this job. Never know if you have a pleasant experience or just outright mad customer. Verizon puts a lot on a customer service rep. Too many requirements of what needs to be offered on a phone call and doesn't matter if the person on the other hand can afford it or not. That – more...  said, the compensation is above average in the industry, since the reps are union, so you can assure that there is job protection. On a daily basis there are sales contest going on, so there is always a change to win either small or big ticket items and if you are on the top, they reward you with a trip where Verizon goes all out. – less
