What it's like working at UL
Senior Field Engineer (Current Employee) –  Carson, CAAugust 24, 2017
Working for UL you are exposed to many products and your job is different through out the year. You are not looking at the same product or doing the same type of work everyday. It's almost different on daily bases. Co workers are great complimenting a strong team environment.

A company that wants to make you better
Senior Business Analyst (Former Employee) –  Northbrook, ILMarch 16, 2017
Pros: UL pushed me to advance myself and gave me the tools and skills I needed to advance my career. The management is very focused on your development and abides by the philosophy of raising everyone up raises the company. I had several opportunities as a junior team member to interact with the corporate officers and ask them questions and guidance.

Average: Benefits are average, they improved the bonus' right before I left.

Cons: At times UL has performed the manager shuffle, moving managers around who are performing very poorly. With all the opportunities for interaction with the upper levels politics becomes a skill that is very important and draws away from productive work sometimes. Although the management is career focused; reviews bonuses, and raises are done on a curve which can be problematic if you work in a small department (which do not have the flexibility to grant higher grades).
Pros
Focused on your improvement, plenty of opportunities, good work life balance
Cons
Manager shuffle, politics, reviews are done on a curve

Respects employees as producers, lacking development opportunities
Project Handler (Current Employee) –  Northbrook, ILFebruary 20, 2017
UL does not offer competitive wages and makes it difficult to advance if you do not have a professional degree (i.e. Engineering, Accounting). Product and valuable employees often find the easiest way to progress financially and professionally is outside of the organization.
There are far too many remnants of "Old UL" that find the profitability of UL insulting. They all long for the "old days" while becoming an obstacle to current operations.
Pros
Strong benefits package, some flexibility in telecommuting but dependent on individual manager (con)
Cons
Old vs New; Few development opportunities

Field Representative II (Former Employee) –  East CoastFebruary 9, 2017
Since moving to a for profit, the bottom has fallen out. More and more with less and less. If the investments were made in house with employees rather then a tunnel vision with focus on other things, it may have expand 10 fold from within.
Pros
Doing the best w limited resouces.
Cons
Management, mind control and software.

Not a carrer
Senior Project Engineer (Former Employee) –  Northbrook, ILSeptember 7, 2014
If you need a job, this is an okay place to work. However, if you are looking for a career or to be mentored and have goals of moving up, this is not the right company for you. This company is full of good old boys and you only move up if the management likes you and you are friendly to them. Raises are not given based on work performance. Since part of the company went for-profit, all you are told is that projects must be closed and that the main goal is to bill money no matter how you do it. My career planning meeting was an email from my leader that said how much money I was billing year to date versus how much I should have been billing.

Human Resources pretends not to know what is going on at all in the company. When they lay people off, the company locks the doors of human resources so they are protected should an employee go postal. The only way to enter human resources is with your badge. So they are protected but the rest of us are subjected to dealing with the anarchy because we are among the masses. They are worried people may go postal because they announce layoffs months in advance.
